The total number of students in the college was 60000 in 2021, which rose to 75000 in 2022. What was the percentage change in the number of students opting for the mathematical sciences from 2021 to 2022? [Give your answer correct to the nearest integer value]

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 12%.

According to the given pie-charts,

Number of students opting mathematical sciences in 2021 = (68.4/360) × 60000

⇒ 0.19 × 60000 = 11400

Number of students opting mathematical sciences in 2022 = (61.2/360) × 75000

⇒ 0.17 × 75000 = 12750

Required percentage increase = [(12750 - 11400)/11400] × 100

⇒ 1350/11400 × 100 = 11.84% ≈ 12%
