The ratio of the incomes of A and B is 5 : 7 and their savings are Rs.5,000 and Rs.9,000, respectively. If the ratio of their expenditures is 3 : 4, then what is the sum of the incomes (in Rs.) of A and B?

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 2 i.e. 84,000.

Let incomes be: A = 5x, B = 7x

A’s expenditure = 5x − 5000

B’s expenditure = 7x − 9000

5x−50007x−9000=34\frac{5x - 5000}{7x - 9000} = \frac{3}{4}

4(5x − 5000) = 3(7x − 9000)

20x − 20000 = 21x − 27000

x = 7000

A’s income = 5x = 5 × 7000 = 35000

B’s income = 7x = 7 × 7000 = 49000 

Total income =  ₹35,000 + ₹49,000 = ₹84,000
