Let the required number be x.

Now, according to the given question,

⇒ x - $\sqrt{x}$ = 2

Squaring both the sides,

⇒ (x - $\sqrt{x}$ )² = 4

⇒ x² + x - 2x$\sqrt{x}$ = 4

Now putting the values of x from the options,

x = 4 L.H.S. of above equation

⇒ 4² + 4 - 16 = 4 = R.H.S.

Hence the required number is 4.
