The average of 52, 71, 43, 22, a, and b is 55 and the average of 42, 45, 49, 51, 42, , c, and d is 53. What is the average of a, b, c, and d?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 4 i.e. 71.

We know that,

Average = Sum of observations/Number of observations

Now,

Sum of (52 + 71 + 43 + 22 + a + b) = 55 × 6 = 330

⇒ a + b = 330 - 188 = 142

Sum of (42 + 45 + 49 + 51+ 42 + c + d) = 53 × 7 = 371

⇒ c + d = 371 - 229 = 142

Now, the average of a, b, c, d = (142+142)4(142+142)\over 4 = 2844284\over 4 = 71

Hence, the average of a, b, c, and d is 71
