A family has 5 adults and 8 children. Their expenditure on milk and sugar, for a month of 30 days, if half-litre milk packets costs Rs.25 and one kg sugar packet costs Rs.80, is __________.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. Rs.17,560.

3 Adults = 2 litres of milk + 0.5 kg sugar

⇒ 5 adults = 103\frac{10}{3} litres of milk + 56\frac{5}{6} kg of sugar

Also, 5 children = 4 litres of milk + 14\frac{1}{4} kg of sugar

⇒ 8 children = 325\frac{32}{5} litres of milk + 25\frac{2}{5} kg of sugar

Total consumption of milk by 5 adults and 8 children in 1 day = 103\frac{10}{3} + 325\frac{32}{5} = 14615\frac{146}{15}

In 30 days = 14615\frac{146}{15} × 30 = 292 litres

Total consumption of sugar by 5 adults and 8 children in 1 day = 56\frac{5}{6} + 25\frac{2}{5} = 3730\frac{37}{30}

In 30 days = 3730\frac{37}{30} × 30 = 37 kg

Cost of 1 litre milk = Rs. 50

Total cost incured = 292 × 50 + 37 × 80

⇒ 14600 + 2960 = 17560
