Study the given table and answer the question that follows.
The table represents the number of scooters (in thousands) manufactured by four companies A, B, C and D from the period 2012 to 2015.

Years A B C D
2012 360 420 380 520
2013 580 940 570 980
2014 1000 780 1020 1090
2015 1240 950 1180 1660

The average number of scooters produced by company D is what percent (rounded off to 2 decimal places) more than the combined average number of scooters produced by the three companies A, B, and C?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 35.35%.

The average number of scooters produced by Company D = (520 + 980 + 1090 + 1660)/4 = 4250/4 = 1062.5

The average number of scooters produced by Company A = (360 + 580 + 1000 + 1240)/4 = 3180/4 = 795

The average number of scooters produced by Company B = (420 + 940 + 780 + 950)/4 = 3090/4 = 772.5

The average number of scooters produced by Company C = (380 + 570 + 1020 + 1180)/4 = 3150/4 = 787.5

The combined average number of scooters produced by the three companies A, B, and C = (795 + 772.5 + 787.5)/3 = 2355/3 = 785

Required percentage = [(1062.5 - 785)/785] × 100 = (277.5/785) × 100 = 35.35% (approx)
