SSC Selection Post 2022 PYQ — Question 4

SSC Selection Post - Graduation Level 2022 - 4 Aug 2022 - Shift 4 • English • Q4

Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.
Dolphins are small-toothed cetaceans easily recognisable by their curved mouths, which give
them a permanent ‘smile’. There are 36 dolphin species, found in every ocean. Most dolphins
are marine and live in the ocean or brackish waters along coastlines. There are a few
species, however, like the South Asian river dolphin and the Amazon river dolphin, or boto,
that live in freshwater streams and rivers. The largest dolphin, the orca, can grow to be over
30 feet long. The smallest, the Maui dolphin, is just five feet long.

Select the option that is correct as per the information given in the passage.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 1 i.e. There are 36 species of dolphins.

Correct Answer: There are 36 species of dolphins
Line to refer: “There are 36 dolphin species, found in every ocean.”

Only option 1 is a factual statement directly mentioned in the passage.
Other options are incorrect:

  • Option 2 is wrong: the passage says some dolphins live in freshwater.

  • Option 3 is misleading: not all dolphins smile; the "smile" is due to their mouth shape.

  • Option 4 is false: dolphin sizes range from 5 feet to 30 feet.

Hence, the chosen option will be correct.
