Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. disappearance.

Context: Here, the sentence expresses that after losing power, the Marathas deeply felt the loss or absence of their freedom, which caused emotional pain.

Meaning of the words:

  • Lost: a verb; grammatically incorrect in this position.

  • Benefit: an advantage or gain; opposite in meaning.

  • Disappearance: the state of no longer existing or being present; fits perfectly as a noun referring to the loss of freedom.

  • Empowerment: giving power or authority; opposite in sense.

Reason: The disappearance of their freedom conveys that their liberty was gone, which rankled (hurt) them deeply — exactly the emotion described in the passage.

Final Sentence: The disappearance of their freedom rankled in their hearts.

Hence, the chosen option will be correct.
