SSC CGL Tier II - English - 16th Nov 2020 • English • Q28

Select the correct indirect form of the given sentence.

The supervisor said to the worker, “How long have you been working for this company?”

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 2 i.e. The supervisor asked the worker how long he had been working for that company.

The given sentence is in direct speech, to convert this sentence into indirect speech we need to follow the following points:

  • Inverted commas will get omitted and 'that' will be used.
  • The reporting verb 'said to' will be changed into 'asked'.
  • 'How' will be used as a conjunction because we know that if the reported speech is interrogative with question word then the question word itself becomes the conjunction.
  • 'You' will be changed into 'he'.
  • In the reporting speech, present perfect continuous tense 'have been working' will be changed into past perfect continuous tense 'had been working'.
  • 'This' will be changed into 'That'.

After following these steps, we got the indirect speech as: The supervisor asked the worker how long he had been working for that company.

Hence, the correct answer is Option 2 i.e. The supervisor asked the worker how long he had been working for that company.
