Understanding

Application

Calculation

Samrat and Virat can complete the work alone in 10 and 40 days respectively.

Suppose,

Total work = LCM of 10 and 40 = 40 units

LCM of 10 and 40 = 10 × 4 = 40

Efficiency = Work/Time

Efficiency of a Samrat = 4

⇒ 40/10 = 4

Efficiency = Work/Time

Efficiency of a Virat = 1

⇒ 40/40 = 1

They are working on alternate days with Samrat starting the work.

So,

Work done in 2 days = 5 units

⇒ 4 + 1 = 5

Hence,

Time in which total work is done = 16 days

⇒ (40/5) × 2 = 16
