Rohan ordered 4 kg of premium tea and some additional kilograms of ordinary tea. The price of the premium tea per kg was twice that of the ordinary tea. When the order was delivered, it was found that the quantities of premium and ordinary tea had been swapped. This change increased his bill by 50%. What is the ratio of the original quantity of premium tea to the original quantity of ordinary tea?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C
Explanation
The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 1:4.
Let price per kg of ordinary tea = x
Premium tea price per kg = 2x
Original bill = 4 × 2x + y × x = 8x + yx
Swapped order = 4 × x + y × 2x = 4x + 2yx
So, 4x + 2yx = 1.5(8x + yx)
⇒ 4 + 2y = 1.5(8 + y)
⇒ 4 + 2y = 12 + 1.5y
⇒ 0.5y = 8
⇒ y = 16 kg
Required ratio = 4 : 16 = 1 : 4
