SSC MTS 2026 PYQ — Question 87

SSC MTS - 12 Feb 2026 - Shift 3 • English • Q87

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions based on the passage:

When a child is surrounded by a universe of faithful and multifaceted objects, he can just see himself as the possessor. As a consumer, never as a maker, he does not create the universe. He applies it: actions are there, sometimes even in a very boring way, open for him, no adventure, no wonder, no joy. The child controls the whole situation as if he were a little stay-at-home householder; he does not even have to invent the mainsprings of adult causality, they are supplied to him ready-made: he just has to take, he never is allowed to find something out by himself from beginning to end. Even the simplest set of blocks, as long as it is not too subtle, suggests a very different learning of the world: the child who plays with the blocks does not in any way produce meaningful objects; the adult's name does not matter at all; the actions he does are those of a user, but he is a maker of gods. He makes forms that walk, that roll, he creates life, not property: the objects now have their own will; they are no longer a dead and complicated material lying in his hand.
According to the passage, why are pre-manufactured toys considered limiting to a child’s development?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

Correct Answer: Option 2

Explanation: The passage states that a child surrounded by such toys becomes a 'consumer, never a maker' — he doesn't create the universe but merely 'applies it.' The actions are 'supplied to him ready-made,' leaving no room for adventure, wonder, joy, or the process of discovering something by himself.
