PQ and RS are two parallel chords of a circle of length 10 cm and 24 cm, respectively, and lie on the same side of the centre O. If the distance between the chords is 7 cm, what is the radius (in cm) of the circle?

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 13.

OR = OP = x radius of the circle

mn = 7

om = y

So, in triangle OMR

x2 = 144 + y2

 x2 - 144 = y2............1

In triangle ONP

x2 = 25 + (y + 7)2

x2 = 25 + y2 + 49 + 14y...........2

Put the value of y2 in equation 1

x2 = 25 + x2 - 144 + 49 + 14y

y = 5

So, the value of x

x2 = 144 + y2 = 144 + 25  = 169

x = 13
