Out of two numbers, 20% of the smaller number is equal to 14% of the larger number. If the sum of both the numbers is 8942, then what is the value of the larger number?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 2 i.e. 5260.

Let the smaller number be x and the larger number be y

0.2x = 0.14y

⇒ x/y = 0.14/0.2 = 7/10

⇒ x = (7/10)y

x + y = 8942

⇒ (7/10)y + y = 8942

⇒ (17/10)y = 8942

⇒ y = 8942/(17/10) = 5260

Hence, the value of the larger number is 5260.
