On the three numbers, the second is one-third of the first and is also three-fourths of the third number. If the average of three numbers is 112, then what is the smallest number?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 63.

Given:

The average of three numbers = 112

Concept Used:

Average = sum of numbers/total numbers

Explanation:

Total of three numbers = 112 × 3 = 336

Let 2nd number be 3a.

According to the question -

1st number × 1/3 = 3a

⇒ 1st number = 3a × 3 = 9a

3rd number × ¾ = 3a

⇒ 3rd number = 3a × 434\over 3 = 4a

⇒ 9a + 3a + 4a = 336

⇒ 16a = 336

⇒ a = 33616336\over 16 = 21

Smallest among three = 3 × 21 = 63

Hence the smallest number is 63.
