Explanation
Champaran Satyagraha: Gandhiji's First Movement in India
This movement, led by Mahatma Gandhi in the Champaran district of Bihar in 1917, was his first civil disobedience movement in India.
The farmers of Champaran were upset with the Tinkathiya system. Under this system, farmers were compulsorily required to cultivate indigo on 3 out of every 20 kattha (15%) of their land.
Gandhiji arrived in Champaran at the invitation of local farmer leader Rajkumar Shukla.
Gandhiji's non-violent protest led to the British government's relenting, and the Champaran Agrarian Act was passed. The Tinkathiya system was abolished, and 25% of the money illegally extorted from farmers was returned to them.
