SSC CHSL 2020 PYQ — Question 9

SSC CHSL - 16th October 2020 - Shift 1 • English • Q9

In the given sentence, identify the segment which contains the grammatical error.

A Delhi bound aircraft has to make an emergency landing at Mumbai airport as a woman passenger suddenly developed a serious breathing problem.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. has to make.

  1. The error lies in part 2 of the statement because of the wrong use of "From of the verb".
  2. We need to replace "To make" with "Made" for making the statement grammatically correct.

Grammatical concept:-

  • As the second part of the statement is in the simple past tense we need to keep the first part in the present perfect tense.
  • Past perfect tense >>>>> Past tense >>>>> Present perfect tense.
  • We need to maintain the sequence of the tense according to the above rule.
  • Only two consecutive tenses can occur together.
  • In the given first action is in "Past tense" hence, the next action will occur in "Present perfect tense".
  • So, we need to keep the second action "emergency landing" in the present perfect tense.
  • Hence, the chosen option is correct.

Correct Sentence:-

A Delhi bound aircraft has made an emergency landing at Mumbai airport as a woman passenger suddenly developed a serious breathing problem.
