SSC CGL - 6th March 2020 Shift 2 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q59

In the given figure, if AB = 10 cm, CD = 7 cm, SD = 4 cm and AS = 5 cm, then BC = ?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 4 i.e. 8 cm.

Understanding/Application

AB = 10 cm, CD = 7 cm, SD = 4 cm and AS = 5 cm

AP and AS are the tangents to the circle from point A.

AP = AS = 5 cm

DR and SD are the tangents to the circle from point D.

DR = SD = 4 cm

Now,

AB = 10

⇒ AP + BP = 10

⇒ 5 + BP = 10

⇒ BP = 5 cm

CD = 7

⇒ DR + CR = 7

⇒ 4 + CR = 7

⇒ CR = 3

BP and BQ are the tangents to the circle from point B.

BP = BQ = 5 cm

CQ and CR are the tangents to the circle from point C.

CQ = CR = 3 cm

Hence,

BC = BQ + CQ = 5 + 3 = 8 cm
