In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

He said to his partner, "I will not be responsible if the project fails."

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2, i.e. He told his partner that he would not be responsible if the project failed.

  • The rules of narration state that it is necessary to change the present tense in direct speech to it's corresponding past tense in indirect speech. The same has been done to this sentence where this option changes the tense to it's past form by using 'would' and 'told'. Secondly, the rules also state that direct speech uses first and second person perspectives, whereas indirect speech uses the third person. This option also uses the third person 'he', making it wholly accurate.
