In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best express the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

He said to Raina, "I cannot marry you now but I shall surely do so next year."

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. He told Raina that he could not marry her then but he would surely do so the following year.

  1. As the reported speech is in "assertive sentence" we need to make changes according to this.
  2. The inverted comma will be changed into "that". 
  3. "said" will be changed into, "told".
  4. "can" will be changed into "could".
  5. "now" will be changed into "then"

As all the rules are followed by the chosen option it will be correct.
