In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

The stranger said to the boy, "Can you tell me the way to Raj Bhawan?"

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. The stranger asked the boy if he could tell him the way to Raj Bhawan.

 

  1. As the reporting verb is in the past tense there will be a change in the tense of the reported speech.
  2. There will be a change in the reporting verb as there is an interrogative sentence.
  3. Reporting verb will be changed into "asked".
  4. "can" will be changed into "could".
  5. Inverted comma will be changed into "if".
  6. As all the rules are followed by the chosen option it will be correct.
