In an election between two candidates, P received 42% of the valid votes and Q won by 45,360 votes. 20% people did not cast their vote. If 10% of the votes cast were found invalid, what is the total number of votes registered in the poll booth?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 3,93,750.

Let the total number of votes be 100x.

Number of votes casted = 80% of 100x

⇒ 80x

Valid votes casted = 90% of 80x

⇒ 72x

Votes recieved by Q = 58% of 72x

According to the given question,

(58% - 42%) of 72x = 45360

 ⇒ 11.52x = 45360

⇒ x = 3937.5

Now, total votes, 100x = 3937.5 × 100 = 393750
