SSC CHSL - 03 July 2024 - Shift 1 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q67

In an election between two candidates, a candidate who gets 78% of the votes is elected by a majority of 448 votes. What is the total number of votes polled?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 800.

Let the total number of votes polled be 100x.

According to the question;

Number of votes winning candidate got = 78% of 100x = 78x

Losing candidate got = 100x - 78x = 22x

⇒ 78x - 22x = 448

⇒ 56x = 448

⇒ x = 8

Hence, total number of votes = 100x = 100 × 8 = 800
