In an election between two candidates A and B, A got 33% of total votes cast and still lost by 55,522 votes. Find the total number of votes got by B.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 1,09,411.

Let the total number of votes be T.

Candidate A got 33% of the total votes:

A′s votes = 0.33T

B′s votes = A′s votes + 55,522 = 0.33T + 55,522

B′s votes = 0.67T

So

⇒ 0.67T = 0.33T + 55,522

⇒ 0.34T = 55,522

⇒ T = 55,5220.34\frac{55,522}{0.34} = 163300

The total number of votes B received = 0.67 × 163,300 = 109,411
