Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 1800

Let the total number of voters be x.

Total votes casted = x - 20% of x = 0.8x

Total number of invalid votes = 40

Total number of registered votes = (0.8x - 40)

The winner gets 42% of registered votes.

Losser gets (80 - 42 = 38%) of the registered votes.

ATQ -

42% of (0.8x - 40) - 38% of (0.8x - 40) + 40 = 112

(33.6x - 1680)/100 - (30.4x + 1520)/100 = 72

3.2x - 160 = 7200

3.2x = 7360

x = 2300

Total number of valid votes = 0.8x - 40 = 0.8(2300) - 40 = 1840 - 40 = 1800
