In an election a candidate secured 47% of the votes and lost to his only opponent by 276 votes. Find the total number of votes polled.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 3 i.e. 4600.

Let the total number of votes polled be x

Candidate A secured 47% of the votes

Candidate B secured the remaining 100% − 47% = 53% of the votes

Votes secured by B - Votes secured by A = 276

⇒ 53%x - 47%x = 276

⇒ 6% x = 276

⇒ x = (276 × 100)/6

⇒ x = 46 × 100

⇒ x = 4600

Thus, The total number of votes polled is 4600
