In a town, the current number of educated people is 40,000. If the number of educated men decreases by 10% and the number of educated women increases by 15%, the total educated population becomes 40,700. What is the present number of educated men in the town?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 21,200.

Let number of educated men = x

Then number of educated women = 40000 − x

After changes:

Educated men = x × (90/100) = 9x/10

Educated women = (40000 − x) × (115/100)

Total = 40700

⇒ 9x/10 + [(40000 − x) × (115/100)] = 40700

⇒ 90x + (40000 − x) × 115 = 40700 × 100

⇒ 90x + 4600000 − 115x = 4070000

⇒ −25x = 4070000 − 4600000

⇒ x = 530000 ÷ 25 = 21200

Present number of educated men = 21200
