In a team of seven members, the average age of six of the members is 42 years while the age of the seventh member of the team is 36 years more than the average age of all the seven members taken together. Find the age (in years) of the seventh member of the team.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 84.

Let the average age of all seven members = x years

The total age of the first six members = 6 × 42 = 252 years

The age of the seventh member = x + 36 years

So, 252 + (x + 36) = 7x

⇒ 288 + x = 7x

⇒ 6x = 288

⇒ x = 288/6 = 48

⇒ x + 36 = 48 + 36 = 84

Therefore, the age of the seventh member is 84 years.
