SSC CGL - 13th June 2019 - Shift 1 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q67

In a circle of radius 17 cm, a chord is at a distance of 15 cm from the centre of the circle. What is the length of chord?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 16 cm

Concept

Understanding

Application

Perpendicular drawn from the center of a circle to the chord divides the chord into 2 equal parts.

In the figure:

OB = R = 17 cm

OP = 15 cm

Applying Pythagoras theorem in triangle OPB:

PB = √(172 - 152)

= √(289-225)

= √64 = 8

Hence,

AB = 2PB = 16 cm
