If x2 + y2 = 280 and xy = 120, then find the value of x−yx+yx-y\over{x+y}.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 1 i.e. 1131\over{\sqrt{13}}.

x2 + y2 = 280 and xy = 120

⇒ x2 + y2 + 2xy - 2xy = 280

⇒ (x + y)2 = 280 + 2xy

⇒ (x + y)2 = 280 + 2 × 120

⇒ (x + y)2 = 280 + 240

⇒ (x + y)2 = 520

⇒ x + y = √520

⇒ x + y = 2√130

Now,

⇒ x2 + y2 = (x - y)2 + 2xy

⇒ 280 = (x - y)2 + 2 × 120

⇒ 280 = (x - y)2 + 240

⇒ (x - y)2 = 40

⇒ x - y = √40

⇒ x - y = 2√10

Now,

The value of x−yx+yx-y\over{x+y}

⇒ 21021302\sqrt10 \over 2\sqrt130

⇒ 10130\sqrt10 \over \sqrt130

⇒ 1010×13\sqrt10 \over \sqrt 10 \times \sqrt13 = 1131\over \sqrt13
