If x2 - 2√(5x) + 1 = 0, then what is the value of x5 + (1/x5)?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e 610√5

⇒ x2 - 2√(5x) + 1 = 0

⇒ (x - √5 + 4)(x - √5 - 4)

⇒ x + 1 / x = √5 + 4 + √5 - 4

⇒ 2√5

⇒ x2 + 1 / x2 = (x + 1 / x)2 - 2

⇒ x2 + 1 / x2 = 20 - 2 = 18

⇒ x3 + 1 / x3 = (x + 1 / x)3 - 3(x + 1 /x)

⇒ 40√5 - 3 × 2√5

⇒34√5

x5 + 1 / x5 = (x2 + 1 / x2)(x3 + 1 / x3) - (x + 1 / x)

⇒ 18 × 34√5 - 2√5

⇒ 610√5
