If x + y + z = 1, xy + yz + zx = xyz = -4, then what is the value of (x3 + y3 + z3)

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 1.

⇒ x + y + z = 1

On squaring both sides we get,

⇒ x2 + y2 + z2 + 2( xy + yz + zx) = 1

⇒ x2 + y2 + z2 + 2 × -4 = 1

⇒ x2 + y2 + z2 = 9

⇒ x3 + y3 + z3 - 3xyz = ( x + y + z)[x2 + y2 + z2  - (xy + yz + zx)]

⇒ x3 + y3 + z3 = 1 × [9 - (-4)] + 3 × -4

⇒ x3 + y3 + z3 = 13 - 12

⇒ x3 + y3 + z3 = 1.
