If x=4+6x=4+\sqrt6 and y=4−6y=4-\sqrt6 then the value of x2+y2x^2+y^2 is:

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 44.

x = 4 + √6

⇒ x2 = (4 + √6)2 = 22 + 8√6

y = 4 - √6

⇒ y2 = (4 - √6)2 = 22 - 8√6

Now, x2 + y2 = (22 + 8√6) + (22 - 8√6) = 22 + 8√6 + 22 - 8√6 = 44

Therefore, the value of x2 + y2 is 44.
