If (x+1x)=22\left ( x+\frac{1}{x} \right )=2\sqrt{2}, and x > 1, what is the value of (x6−1x6)\left ( x^6-\frac{1}{x^6} \right )?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 1402140\sqrt{2}.

(x+1x)=22\left ( x+\frac{1}{x} \right )=2\sqrt{2}

Cubing both sides

⇒ x3 + 1/x3 + 3 (x + 1/x) = 16√2

⇒ x3 + 1/x3 = 16√2 - 6√2 = 10√2

As we know,

⇒ (x - 1/x)2 = (x + 1/x)2 - 4 = 8 - 4 = 4

⇒ (x - 1/x) = 2

Cubing both sides

⇒ x3 - 1/x3 - 3 (x - 1/x) = 8

⇒ x3 - 1/x3 = 8 + 6 = 14

Hence, (x6−1x6)\left ( x^6-\frac{1}{x^6} \right ) = (x3 + 1/x3 )(x3 - 1/x3) = 10√2 × 14 = 140√2
