SSC CHSL - 07 Aug 2023 - Shift 2 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q63

If (x - 1x\frac{1}x) = 0.4 and x > 0, what is the value of (x2 + 1x2\frac{1}{x^2}) ?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 2.16.

x - (1/x) = 0.4

⇒ [x - (1/x)]2 = 0.42 = 0.16   [Squaring both sides]

⇒ x2 - [2 × x × (1/x)] + (1/x)2 = 0.16

⇒ x2 - 2 + (1/x)2 = 0.16

⇒ x2 + (1/x)2 = 0.16 + 2 = 2.16

Therefore, the required value is 2.16.
