If the radii of two circles are 6 cm and 3 cm and the length of the transverse common tangent is 8 cm, then the distance between the two circles is:

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 145\sqrt{145}.

r1 = 6 cm

r2 = 3cm

Length of the transverse common tangent = 8 cm

transverse common tangent = d2−(r1+r2)2\sqrt{d^2-(r_1+r_2)^2}

d = distance between the two circles

8 = d2−(6+3)2\sqrt{d^2-(6+3)^2}

64 = d2 - 81

d = 145\sqrt{145}
