If the price of petrol is increased by 81%, by what percentage should the consumption of petrol be decreased by the consumer if the expenditure on petrol remains unchanged? (Correct to two decimal places)

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 44.75%.

Let the initial price petrol be Rs.100 per liter.

According to the given question,

New price of the petrol = 181% of 100 = Rs.181

Required percentage = 181−100181×100{{181 - 100}\over 181} \times 100

⇒ 81181×100{81\over 181} \times 100 = 44.75%

Hence the consumption should be decreased by 44.75%.
