If P : Q = 5 : 3 and Q : R = 2 : 5, then what is the value of Q : (P + R)?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 6 : 25.

From P : Q = 5 : 3

P = 5k

 Q = 3k

From Q : R = 2 : 5

 Q = 2m

 R = 5m

( Q )  equal to both expressions.

⇒ 3k = 2m

⇒ k = 2m / 3

 k = 2m / 3 into the expressions for  P  and  R :

⇒  P = 5k = 5 × 2m / 3 = 10m / 3

⇒ R = 5m

⇒ P + R = 10m3+5m=10m3+15m3=25m3\frac{10m}{3} + 5m = \frac{10m}{3} + \frac{15m}{3} = \frac{25m}{3}

⇒ Q : (P + R) = QP+R=2m25m3=2m×325m=625\frac{Q}{P + R} = \frac{2m}{\frac{25m}{3}} = 2m \times \frac{3}{25m} = \frac{6}{25}

The value of ( Q : (P + R) ) is 6 : 25.
