If 3 sin A + 4 cos A = 5, then the value of tan A is:

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 1 i.e. 343\over 4.

3 sin A + 4 cos A = 5

⇒ 4 cos A = 5 - 3 sin A

⇒ (4 cos A)2 = (5 - 3 sin A)2

⇒ 16(1 - sin2A) = 25 + 9 sin2A - 30 sinA

⇒ 16 - 16sin2A = 25 + 9 sin2A - 30 sinA

⇒ 25 sin2A - 30 sin A + 9 = 0

⇒ 25 sin2A - 15 sin A - 15 sin A + 9 = 0

⇒ 5sinA(5 sinA - 3) - 3(5 sinA - 3) = 0

⇒ (5 sinA - 3)(5 sinA - 3) = 0

⇒ (5 sinA - 3)2 = 0

⇒ 5 sinA - 3 = 0

⇒ sinA = 3/5 = P/H

By Pythagoras theorem,

⇒ H2 = B2 + P2

here, H  = Hypotaneous, B = Base, P = Perpendicular

⇒ B2 = 52 - 32

⇒ B2 = 25 - 9

⇒ B2 = 16

⇒ B = 4

So,

⇒ tan A = P/B = 343\over 4
