SSC MTS - 18 Feb 2026 - Shift 2 • English • Q84

Given below are six sentences taken from a paragraph. The first and the last sentences are numbered S1 and S2 and are placed in the first and last positions respectively and are fixed in their positions. The other four sentences between the first and last sentences are jumbled up and are numbered A, B, C, and D. Rearrange the jumbled sentences in a logical sequence keeping the unity and coherence of the paragraph intact. Choose the correct alternative that best describes the sequence.

S1. And addressing another eunuch, he said to him, o my chief, as thou hopest for Allah's protection, tell me, am I the Prince of the Faithful?

A. And Abou Hassan, perplexed at all that he beheld, said, In one night do I become Prince of the Faithful!

B. He remained perplexed and confounded until the morning, when a eunuch advanced to him and said to him, May Allah grant a happy morning to the Prince of the Faithful!

C. Yea, by Allah, answered the eunuch; thou art at this present time the Prince of the Faithful and the caliph of the Lord of all creatures.

D. Was I not yesterday Abou Hassan, and today am I the Prince of the Faithful?

S2. And he handed to him a pair of shoes of gold stuff, reticulated with precious stones and rubies; and Abou Hassan took them, and after examining them a long time, put them into his sleeve.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

Logical sequence of sentences:

C follows S1: Since S1 ends with a direct question ("...am I the Prince of the Faithful?"), sentence C is the direct answer: "Yea, by Allah, answered the eunuch; thou art..."

A follows C: After being told he is the Prince, sentence A describes Abou Hassan's immediate reaction of bewilderment: "And Abou Hassan, perplexed at all that he beheld, said, in one night do I become Prince of the Faithful!"

D follows A: Sentence D continues his internal/external monologue of disbelief, comparing his past identity to his present one: "Was I not yesterday Abou Hassan, and today am I the Prince of the Faithful?"

B follows D: Sentence B acts as a bridge to the final action. It describes his state of confusion lasting until morning when yet another eunuch greets him with the same title, reinforcing the reality of his new position before the final interaction in S2.
