SSC MTS - 11 Feb 2026 - Shift 3 • English • Q84

Given below are six sentences taken from a paragraph. The first and the last sentences are numbered S1 and S2 and are placed in the first and last positions respectively and are fixed in their positions. The other four sentences between the first and last sentences are jumbled up and are numbered A, B, C, and D. Rearrange the jumbled sentences in a logical sequence keeping the unity and coherence of the paragraph intact. Choose the correct alternative that best describes the sequence.

S1. He remained a day in order to learn the art, because he thought he might be able to turn it to use later on, if by chance he should fail to find other work in Batavia.

A. Neither on the first nor the second day had he realized how lonely he was, because he was captivated by the grand idea of earning enough money to buy two buffaloes, whereas his father had never had more than one, and was too excited over the prospect of seeing Adinda again to grieve over his departure.

B. The following day toward evening he thanked his host and departed.

C. He had left her in anxious hope.

D. As soon as it was dark, and no one could see him, he took out the Melatti leaves Adinda had given him, for he was sad, thinking that he would not see her for so long.

S2. The prospect of seeing her again so occupied his heart that on leaving Badoer and passing the tree, he felt something akin to joy, as if the thirty-six moons were already past.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

Logical Sequence of sentences:

S1 to A: S1 mentions he stayed a day. A follows logically by describing his feelings during that time ('first nor the second day').

A to D: Sentence A mentions his excitement about seeing Adinda. D continues this thought by showing him looking at the leaves she gave him when it became dark.

D to B: After the night (D), the narrative moves to the following day evening when he finally leaves (B).

B to C: As he departs (B), we are told the state in which he left her (C).

C to S2: Sentence C ends with his departure from her, and S2 concludes with his feelings as he continues his journey away from 'Badoer.'

The correct sequence is ADBC.
