SSC MTS 2026 PYQ — Question 83

SSC MTS - 12 Feb 2026 - Shift 1 • English • Q83

Given below are six sentences taken from a paragraph. The first and the last sentences are numbered S1 and S2 and are placed in the first and last positions respectively and are fixed in their positions. The other four sentences between the first and last sentences are jumbled up and are numbered A, B, C, and D. Rearrange the jumbled sentences in a logical sequence keeping the unity and coherence of the paragraph intact. Choose the correct alternative that best describes the sequence.

S1. I knew it was the most famous spot in Honolulu and I entered it with a lively curiosity.

A. It is a large square room, with three entrances, and opposite the bar, which runs the length of it, two corners have been partitioned off into little cubicles.

B. There is a portrait of him, in oils, in a rich gold frame; but there are also two prints of Queen Victoria.

C. Legend states that they were built so that King Kalakaua might drink there without being seen by his subjects, and it is pleasant to think that in one or other of these he may have sat over his bottle, a coal-black potentate, with Robert Louis Stevenson.

D. You get to it by a narrow passage from King Street, and in the passage are offices, so that thirsty souls may be supposed bound for one of these just as well as for the saloon.

S2. On the walls, besides, are old line engravings of the eighteenth century, one of which, and heaven knows how it got there, is after a theatrical picture by De Wilde; and there are oleographs from the Christmas supplements of the Graphic and the Illustrated London News of twenty years ago.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

S1 (Fixed): The narrator expresses curiosity about a famous spot in Honolulu and enters it.

D (Next): This sentence logically follows the "entering" part. It describes the physical path taken to reach the place ("a narrow passage from King Street"). It sets the scene before we see the interior.

A (Next): Once inside, the narrator describes the layout of the room ("a large square room") and mentions "two corners have been partitioned off into little cubicles."

C (Next): This provides historical context for the cubicles mentioned in sentence A ("Legend states that they [the cubicles] were built..."). It mentions King Kalakaua.

B (Next): This continues the description of the room's contents, specifically the decorations relating to royalty ("a portrait of him [the King]" and "prints of Queen Victoria").

S2 (Fixed): This concludes the description of the walls and other artwork ("On the walls, besides, are old line engravings..."), finishing the detailed tour of the room.

Therefore, the correct sequence is DACB.
