SSC GD 2026 PYQ — Question 73

SSC GD Constable - 29 April 2026 - Shift 3 • English • Q73

Given below are six sentences taken from a paragraph. The first and the last sentences are numbered S1 and S2 and are placed in the first and last positions respectively and are fixed in their positions. The other four sentences between the first and last sentences are jumbled up and are numbered A, B, C, and D. Rearrange the jumbled sentences in a logical sequence keeping the unity and coherence of the paragraph intact. Choose the correct alternative that best describes the sequence.

S1. At the terminus, as they were leaving Havre, people stared at her, and Boitelle was proud of giving his arm to a person who commanded so much attention.

A. A child, at sight of her, began to cry with terror, another concealed his face in his mother's apron.

B. But when the train slackened its rate of motion as they drew near Yvetot, Antoine felt ill at ease, as he would have done at a review when he did not know his drill practice.

C. Then, in the third-class carriage, in which she took a seat by his side, she aroused so much astonishment among the country folks that the people in the adjoining compartments stood up on their benches to look at her over the wooden partition which divides the compartments.

D. Everything went off well, however, up to their arrival at their destination.

S2. At the station, the people were even more astonished to see them together, and Boitelle felt very proud of the attention they attracted.

Explanation

The correct sequence is B → C → A → D.

S1 describes Boitelle leaving Havre with the woman and feeling proud of the attention she received. B logically follows as the train slows down near Yvetot, making Antoine feel uneasy. C then describes the astonishment of the country people when they see the woman in the third-class carriage. A continues this reaction by describing how the children become frightened upon seeing her. Finally, D concludes that everything went well until they reached their destination.

The complete sequence is:
S1 → B → C → A → D → S2

Key Points

Identify the logical sequence of events.

Look for cause-and-effect relationships between sentences.

Pay attention to pronouns and connecting words such as “then,” “but,” and “however.”

The sentence before S2 should naturally lead to the concluding idea.
