SSC CGL 2019 PYQ — Question 27

SSC CGL - 12th June 2019 - Shift 3 • General Awareness • Q27

_______ gases trap heat in the atmosphere which makes the Earth warmer, causing global warming.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. Greenhouse.

Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere which makes the Earth warmer, causing global warming.

Greenhouse gas:

  • A greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated GHG) is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range. Greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect on planets. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ozone (O3). Without greenhouse gases, the average temperature of Earth's surface would be about −18 °C (0 °F), rather than the present average of 15 °C (59 °F).
  • The atmospheres of Venus, Mars, and Titan also contain greenhouse gases.
  • Global warming occurs when greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, and other pollutants collect in the atmosphere and absorb solar radiation and sunlight.
  • The average global temperature in the past 50 years has increased tremendously because of it.
