From a 50-litre mixture containing alcohol and water in the ratio 3:2, 10 litres are removed and replaced with water. What is the new ratio of alcohol to water?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

Given:

Mixture = 50 liters, Ratio = 3 : 2

According to the formula:

The mixture removed retains the same ratio.

Initial Alcohol = 30 liters, Water = 20 liters

10 liters removed:

Alcohol = 6 liters, Water = 4 liters

Remaining:

Alcohol = 30 − 6 = 24

Water = 20 − 4 = 16

Now, 10 liters of water is added:

Water = 16 + 10 = 26

New Ratio = 24 : 26 = 12 : 13
