SSC CGL 2025 PYQ — Question 26

SSC CGL - 13 Sep 2025 - Shift 1 • General Awareness • Q26

Consider the following statements about atmospheric layers:

  1. Most weather events take place in the stratosphere.

  2. The ozone layer is mainly located in the troposphere.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. Neither 1 nor 2.

Both statements given are incorrect. Most weather events such as rainfall, thunderstorms, clouds, and winds occur in the troposphere, which is the lowest layer of the atmosphere extending up to about 12–18 km. This layer contains nearly 75% of the total atmospheric mass and most water vapour, making it the centre of all weather activity. The stratosphere, lying above the troposphere, is calm, stable, and free from major weather disturbances.

The ozone layer, which absorbs harmful UV radiation, is mainly located in the stratosphere, roughly between 15–35 km altitude. It protects life on Earth by filtering ultraviolet rays. Therefore, neither Statement 1 nor Statement 2 is correct.
