SSC CGL 2019 PYQ — Question 14

SSC CGL Tier II English - 11/09/2019 • English • Q14

Choose the most appropriate option to change the narration (direct / indirect) of the given sentence.

Rita said, “I’m not feeling well.”

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1, i.e. Rita said that she was not feeling well.

  1. Option 1 is correct because when we change from 'direct' to 'indirect' if the speech within inverted comma is in the present tense then we use it's corresponding past tense whilst converting to indirect speech. This is what this particular sentence follows too.
  2. Option 2 is incorrect because it indicates future tense 'will not be' whereas according to grammar rules, if direct speech denotes present we can change it to it's corresponding past tense in indirect speech.
  3. Option 3 is incorrect because it doesn't use 'that' in the indirect speech. It is mandatory that we use 'that' after having removed the inverted commas.
  4. Option 4 is incorrect because 'I am' is still in the first person and hence remain as a part of direct speech, whereas regarding indirect speech we are supposed to use second or third person to form accuracy in the sentence.
