At present, A is younger than B by 8 years. If 4 years ago, their ages were in the ratio 1 : 2, then what is the present age of B (in years)?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 2 i.e. 20.

Let the present age of A = x years

So, present age of B = (x + 8) years

If 4 years ago, their ages were in the ratio 1 : 2

So,

(x - 4)/(x + 4) = 1/2

⇒ 2(x - 4) = (x + 4)

⇒ 2x - 8 = x + 4

⇒ x = 12

Thus, the present age of B = x + 8 = 12 + 8 = 20
