SSC CHSL - 11 July 2024 - Shift 4 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q55

An election was held between two candidates. The winning candidate scored 54% of the valid votes and won by 88 votes. If 58 votes were declared invalid, then find the total number of votes polled in the election.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 1158.

Let the total number of valid votes = x

0.54x - 0.46x = 88

⇒ 0.08x = 88

⇒ x = 88/0.08 = 1100

Invalid votes = 58

Total votes polled = 1100 + 58 = 1158

Therefore, the total number of votes polled in the election is 1158.
