A trader offers the following discount schemes for the purchase of his goods. Find the scheme which has the minimum discount.

(i) Two successive discounts of 12% each

(ii) Discount of 20%

(iii) Buy 5 and get 1 free

(iv) Buy 6 and get 2 free

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. (iii).

Let the marked price be 100.

(i) Two successive discounts of 12% each

SP = 100 × 88/100 × 88/100

⇒ 77.44

(ii) Discount of 20%

SP = 100 × 80/100

⇒ 80

(iii) Buy 5 and get 1 free

SP = 100 - (100 × 1/6)

⇒ 83.33

(iv) Buy 6 and get 2 free

SP = 100 × 75/100

⇒ 75

Hence the minimum discount is given in scheme (iii).
